Women in Tech at DocuSign: Bhavna C.

Our “Women in Tech” blog series places the spotlight on female employees in tech jobs who tell us about why they decided to start a career in software engineering, what they do at DocuSign, who their role models are and more. At DocuSign, we believe in the next generation of female leaders in technology and want to help them get on the right career trajectory. This week we sat down with Bhavna in Product Engineering Core API based in Seattle to learn more about her career.

What is your current role at DocuSign and what do you actually do day-to-day in that role?

I am a Senior Software Engineer with the API team. Day-to-day I develop REST APIs for enabling new features, fix bugs with existing features and provide guidance to junior developers.

What did your kids or friends and family think you do?

Code.

When did you choose to work in technology and why?

While I was in middle school, I was drawn to Math a lot. I always found it very logical and easy to understand and I loved solving challenging problems. I even remember reading ahead of the class the topics out of pure interest! Once I was done with high school, choosing Engineering for bachelor’s seemed like the obvious next step.

My major was Electronics but computers was always the most fun! I had always been most attracted to math while in school and college and software just seemed natural next step, it’s very logical. There is a lot of satisfaction when you solve a tough problem and get to build products that gets used by so many people and is useful to them!

What excites you most about working at DocuSign and why?

Apart from the business aspect, it’s great to see how I am contributing to saving time, saving trees and helping the environment. I feel a lot of pride when I see customers using features that I’ve built myself. I have a financial advisor at UBS and she was walking through the signer authentication while making me sign the documents! I wrote the authentication pieces. That was very cool.

As a woman in tech, do you have any role models in technology that you look up to? Who are they and why do you look up to them?

I look up to Sheryl Sandberg. The things she says and does are sometimes so basic but she calls it out and I admire her deep insight into women’s attitudes and behaviors at work.

What advice would you give women who might be considering a career in technology?

Always strive to challenge yourself. If you don’t feel challenged, look for the next challenge.
