Completion rates drive business results, because an agreement only creates value once it's signed. Customers who switched to Docusign reported higher and faster completion rates compared to their previous provider. For teams that send agreements at volume, a 13 percentage point increase can have a significant impact on financial performance.

An unsigned agreement is a hire who hasn't started, a deal that hasn't closed, or a customer who never finished onboarding. The e-signature completion rate shows how many of the agreements you send are actually signed and, more importantly, directly impacts business goals such as faster time to revenue and higher customer satisfaction.

What 178 companies saw when they switched to Docusign

To see how that plays out for customers, Docusign surveyed 178 U.S. mid-market and enterprise companies in July 2026. All have 500 or more employees, and all switched to Docusign from another e-signature provider within the last 24 months. Respondents compared their experience with Docusign to their experience with other e-signature solutions. Here's what they reported:

  • 91%

of agreements were completed with Docusign, compared with 78% with a previous e-signature provider.

  • 2.7x

Respondents completed agreements 2.7x faster with Docusign, an average of 31 hours compared with 84 hours with a previous provider.

“The ROI was undeniable. Faster closes, fewer follow-ups, and compliance we could actually prove to regulators.”

What a stalled agreement actually costs

The cost depends on what the agreement is for. Among financial services respondents, new client intake and account opening were the most common agreement types, ahead of KYC and compliance attestations and credit, loan, and mortgage applications.

Our survey respondents also reported that about half of the agreements they process carry a directly stated dollar value, most commonly between $2,500 and $9,999. When an agreement like that stalls, it can mean a stalled account opening and lost revenue.

Why Docusign eSignature converts better

The survey points to two areas: improved security and reduced administrative effort. Docusign has built capabilities for both.

Improved security

87% of respondents strongly agreed that Docusign provides strong fraud prevention and identity verification without complicating the signing experience.

“Docusign gave us the advanced authentication and audit trails we were looking for, plus fraud monitoring that actually works perfectly for banking.”

Docusign Identify builds identity verification into the signing workflow. Signers can take a picture of  a government-issued ID and complete a quick biometric check, verify their identity with any one of the pre-verified providers, answer knowledge-based questions, or enter a one-time passcode sent by SMS or phone call. Customers who need Qualified Electronic Signatures under eIDAS can use ID Verification for EU Qualified. The automated document and biometric checks can verify a signer in under a minute.

Separate research points the same way. The Future of Global Identity Verification report from Onfido and Docusign surveyed more than 1,400 decision-makers, finding that the average organization saved $8 million by investing in identity verification, and organizations that invested significantly were 1.6x more likely to report a positive impact on their brand.

Reduced administrative effort

96% of respondents in our recent survey said reduced manual follow-up or admin work is one of the ways they measure ROI. Two eSignature capabilities support that measurement directly:

  1. Smart Recommendationsanalyzes historical completion patterns and signer behavior as you prepare an envelope, then suggests changes to boost signing rates. Suggestions can include automatic reminders sent at the most optimal time, send times matched to repeat signers' completion patterns, mobile-friendly formatting or SMS and WhatsApp delivery when mobile use is detected, and an AI-drafted message to improve email open rates. Administrators turn the feature on in Sending Settings.

  2. Template Insightsgives administrators and template owners a running view of how each template performs, including completion, sender-voided, and expired rates. Color-coded health badges show which templates are at risk, and monthly alerts flag templates that fall below account completion thresholds.

“My operations team was spending hours chasing down signatures and Docusign's automated reminders cut that time significantly.”

Completion rate is the real ROI signal

Respondents cited completion rate as the most important attribute in an e-signature solution and the best way to measure its ROI. That's because completion rates have such a direct impact on key business objectives like revenue and CSAT.

When they do measure it, completion rate comes first: Nearly all (99%) said higher completion rates are one of the ways they assess ROI, followed by employee time saved, reduced manual follow-up, and faster agreement completion (96% each). Another 3/4 pointed to faster revenue recognition, onboarding, or deal closure. For these buyers, completion rate is the working definition of ROI.

Every company surveyed sends at least 100 agreements a month. At that volume, a few points of completion rate add up to a meaningful number of stalled agreements.

The bottom line

Completion rate tracks real business outcomes that organizations care about: a hire that starts on time, a deal that closes and an account that opens. Every stalled agreement has a cost somewhere else in the business, and survey respondents reported completing more of their agreements faster after switching to Docusign.
