    • What are Rules in Docusign IAM?
    • Rules in action: across the contract journey
        • Controlled self-service: speed without sacrificing governance

Your business runs on contracts, but tracking expirations, routing notifications, and filing signed PDFs shouldn't be what fills up your day.

That's the quiet tax on contract work: not the big, strategic negotiations, but the constant stream of small manual tasks. Someone has to notice a contract renewal is coming up. Someone has to remember to tell the account team a request got approved. Someone has to copy the signed PDF into the right folder. None of it is hard. All of it adds up.

The usual fix — "build a workflow" — often creates its own problem. A blank canvas and a full workflow builder are powerful, but they can also be intimidating, or they land on IT's desk as yet another ticket in the queue. So teams default to doing it manually, again, because that at least feels faster than waiting.

That's the gap Rules in Docusign Intelligent Agreement Management (IAM) were built to close. They’re a fast, no-code way for any business user to automate everyday contract tasks. No IT ticket, no blank canvas, no waiting.

What are Rules in Docusign IAM?

Rules are simple "if this, then that" automations, built for people who have a specific repetitive task in mind.

How they work: Every Rule follows the same fill-in-the-blanks structure: Trigger → Condition → Action. Something happens (a request is submitted, a contract is signed, a renewal date approaches), and if a condition is met (request type, contract value, contract type), then an action fires (send an email, post to Slack, archive a file, generate a document).

Where to find them: Rules live under the new Automations tab in Docusign IAM, a single home for the suite of automation capabilities, whether you're building a quick rule, a more complex workflow, or an agent who handles non-deterministic work.

Why they’re different: There's no branching logic, no developer skills, and no multi-step architecture to plan out. You're not designing a system; you're describing a task you already do by hand and letting Rules take it off your plate.

Rules in action: across the contract journey

Rules can be applied to tasks across the contract journey, and are also built into the surfaces of Agreement Desk and Agreement Manager.

        In Agreement Desk

This is where requests come in and move through approval, and where a lot of manual status-chasing happens today. Rules can automate the intake and routing logic directly:

        • Sales: When a request type is submitted as "NDA," send an email alert to the relevant team.

        • Approval routing: When a Purchase Request is submitted and the total contract value exceeds a set threshold, automatically send it for approval with custom email text.

        • Status updates: When a request status changes to Approved, automatically notify the account team. No one has to remember to send that email.

        In Agreement Manager

Once an contract is signed, rules shift from intake logic to lifecycle governance. The metadata hygiene and milestone tracking that otherwise falls through the cracks:

        • Procurement renewal alerts: 30 days before a vendor contract expires, trigger a renewal reminder in Slack.

        • HR archiving: When an offer letter is signed, automatically archive a copy to Google Drive.

        • Standardized naming: When AI extraction completes on an MSA, update the file name to a consistent format — Party Name, Agreement Type, Effective Date — so nothing gets buried under "Finalv3FINAL.pdf."

        • Automated renewal tickets: When an MSA's renewal date is 90 days out, automatically create a Renewal Request in Agreement Desk and assign it to the account owner.

None of these require a developer. They require someone who's tired of doing the same five-minute task every week and would rather automate it once.

Controlled self-service: speed without sacrificing governance

The obvious question with any self-service automation tool is: what stops this from turning into ungoverned sprawl, where every team builds their own fragile, undocumented mini-systems that nobody can audit?

Rules are deliberately built to avoid that trap.

        • Reduce IT backlog, not IT oversight. Giving business teams a self-serve way to handle routine "glue code" tasks frees IT from being the bottleneck for every small automation request. Teams can focus on the architecture and integrations that actually need their attention.

        • Operate inside existing permission models. Rules don't sit outside your governance structure. It runs within Docusign's existing account-level controls. Administrators retain full visibility into approved integrations, user permissions, and system access. Business users get speed; IT doesn't lose the map.

        • Include built-in guardrails by design. Rules intentionally support a bounded scope: up to five condition statements using strict AND/OR logic. That's enough to solve real everyday tasks, but it's a hard ceiling that prevents Rules from becoming an unmanaged substitute for proper workflow design. When something genuinely needs multi-system orchestration or complex branching, that complexity belongs in full Workflow Builder, with its fuller governance model — and rules are built to hand off to it, not compete with it.

That's the actual balance: democratized automation for the 80% of tasks that are simple and repetitive, with a clear, intentional boundary for the 20% that need real architecture.

        Start automating today

You don't need to design a workflow or file an IT ticket to save real time this week. If you've ever thought "I do this exact same manual step every time one of these comes in" — that's a rule waiting to be built.

Log into Docusign IAM, head to the Automations tab, and create your first Rule today.

Availability: Rules are available now to any customer globally deployed to the US ("NA") data center region, across all IAM plans, in English.
