Why DocuSign’s New EU Data Centres are Game Changing

At DocuSign we revealed this week (9 December, 2014) exciting plans for two European data centres to be situated in Amsterdam and Frankfurt. These are scheduled for completion in the first part of 2015 and will be our first European data centres. And we will be announcing a third location later in the year to further scale our datacenter capacity in Europe.

Our decision to implement data centres is motivated partly by rapid growth in our EU business since we opened the London office in 2011, and partly by regulatory requirements governing storage of customer data for businesses operating in the EU.

A Game Changer

Why is this significant for our customers? Firstly, it will diminish any apprehensions about moving to the cloud. This investment dramatically reduces concerns about data privacy and EU regulations regarding data stored in the company’s infrastructure, particularly for those within the financial services and insurance sector. It was fantastic to see the reaction from industry specialists such as Robin Wilton of the Internet Society, who paid testament to the investment that "shows great awareness of the current climate for trusted services.”

Naturally, our EU-based customers are, and always have been, protected by our participation in the EU-U.S. Safe Harbor framework, which permits EU-based customers to store customer information on our US-based servers. Nevertheless, the new data centres will, in our view, largely reduce any lingering worries.

Having taken on-board our customer's feedback and experiencing rapid and accelerating adoption of DocuSign the platform across Europe, now was the right time to put these in place. Our Chief Technology Officer, Grant Peterson, also reflected this in his statement, reinforcing the need to "replicate our industry-leading carrier grade availability and bank grade security to our new data centres in Europe to empower anyone to transact anything, anytime, anywhere, on any device securely on the DocuSign Global Trust Network.”
