Q: What do you do at DocuSign?
I’m an SMB Account Executive at DocuSign. I work primarily with small and medium-sized businesses that are in the southeast region beginning with Florida and moving up along the Atlantic.
Q: What is the best thing about working at DocuSign?
Definitely the people. Not only are they cool and fun to be around, they’re constantly providing a flow of fresh ideas. It’s a very collaborative work environment here — that’s something I really enjoy.
Q: How is your team different than other teams at DocuSign? Is there anything special about your team’s dynamic?
I’ve had a couple of promotions during my time here at DocuSign, and am actually very new to this particular team. So, I’m still trying to figure out the dynamic and the feel. Even just being here 30 days, though, I can tell it’s a very relaxed atmosphere.
Q: What is the best advice you can give to someone starting a new job in your department at DocuSign?
Humble yourself and don’t think you’re better than anyone else. Also, be ready to learn. Open your mind to a lot of different perspectives. Essentially, I’d say to just be yourself. There’s that famous quote, “be yourself, everyone else is already taken,” and it’s especially important to sales. When you work in sales, you can’t be a carbon copy of everyone else. You need to find your own voice to be able to truly relate to the customer. To do that, I’d recommend listening to a lot of others to strengthen your core values and ultimately, how you sell. I think I’m successful because I’m different.
Q: What traits do you most admire in your colleagues at DocuSign?
Everyone is incredibly helpful. They’re all so willing to jump in, get their hands dirty and help. That’s really refreshing because in this role you’re constantly talking to people. You’re customer-facing and need to know the ins and outs. If you don’t, it’s nice to be able to rely on your team to help with whatever you need to get to the next level. It’s not just restricted to my team. It’s a general trend with DocuSign: I could reach out to a team I’ve never spoken with and know I’d get support.
Q: What traits do you think your DocuSign colleagues most admire in you?
Love it or hate it — I’m definitely a go-getter and someone who fights for what I believe in. I work with a lot of integrity which is especially important in a sales role.
Q: What is something most of your colleagues at DocuSign don’t know about you?
When I was sixteen, I made my first dollar. My friend and I wanted to go to Hawaii and needed to raise the money. So, we put our heads together and decided to take an entrepreneurial spin on the challenge. I was a huge emo kid and listened to “Taking Back Sunday,” “Brand New,” “New Found Glory,” “Dashboard Confessional” — all those bands. So together, my friend and I set up a Battle of the Bands and got a bunch of bands around Seattle to participate. Each day leading up to the event, we would go to different high schools in the area and hand out flyers. If you brought back the flyer back, we’d take $2 off your bill. And in the end, we made around $5000. Then we flew to Hawaii for spring break and just chilled.
Q: What is your favorite snack from the DocuSign kitchen?
I’m really liking that we’ve got salami and cheese and those gluten-free crackers. And the grapes. So, I’ll just make a little Docu-charcuterie board. Everyone lost their mind when we moved to the new building because the snacks were so good. People started hoarding food. It was like “Hunger Games.”
Q: Where is your favorite place to work or have a meeting at DocuSign and why?
At my desk. I just zone in and grind. I’ve tried working from home, but when I’m sitting at my desk I feel like I’m at my command station. I have two screens. All my amenities are right at my fingertips.
Q: What is the best project you ever worked on at DocuSign and why?
The Pride Parade was the best project I’ve done. It was a scary time for a lot of people in the LGBTA community because the shootings had just occurred at Pulse in Orlando. It was nice to be able to shed light on something like that. Not just in the tech industry, but throughout the the community here in Seattle. I liked that we were able to show we are committed allies to everyone within the community. People came together to support a good cause, and everyone who participated had a blast.
Q: If you were not working at DocuSign and could do anything in the world, what would you be doing/do next?
I’d probably own a parking lot. You know, pave paradise and put up a parking lot [laughs]. I’d get some land and set up a parking lot and every couple days go collect the money and then go home. That way I could spend a lot of time doing whatever I wanted.
Q: What is the secret for you to happiness?
The secret to happiness is not taking things too seriously. It’s important to understand that life is short. If you’re not having fun while you’re doing it, you’re wasting your time. I definitely subscribe to the work hard/play hard mentality. I’m working in a role that I’ve wanted for a long time and am meeting a lot of great people along the way. Other than that? Laughing, travelling, and exploring. And eating pizza.
