Our “Second City” blog series places the spotlight on DocuSign employees based in Chicago and Warrenville who tell us about why they decided to join DocuSign, what they do here, what it’s like living and working in Chicago (an emerging tech hub), and more. At DocuSign, we want employees to look back at their time here and say they did the work of their life at DocuSign. This week we sat down with Karen M. in Finance based in Chicago to learn more about her career.

Are you originally from the Chicago area?
I’m originally from Mexico City, I moved to the South Side of Chicago when I was 8 years old. We moved here because my dad loved the Chicago Bulls at the time and he wanted to watch a game. To this day, he has not attended a basketball game at United Center.

What do you do at DocuSign?
I manage accounts receivable for our accounting team, I have many responsibilities where I wear multiple hats.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in Finance?
I was in the Montessori school system until I was 7 yrs old which sparked my interest in math and arts. I planned to be an interior designer, but didn’t want to be a starving artist so I played it safe and pursued accounting. I was intrigued by how numbers can tell a story behind the operation and health of a company’s performance.

What excites you most about working for DocuSign in Chicago?
The people I work with make coming to work worth it. Not too many people can say they genuinely bond with their coworkers while learning, problem-solving, and creating new projects together. I absolutely love the people I work with. The benefits are also a-mazing! My favorite benefits are the ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Plan) contribution and the daily avocado supply.

Based on your observations, what are the advantages of working in Chicago?
The Midwest is the simply best – I love the people here, and our city is so beautiful and has so much to offer! Each season has its own “wow” factor. We have it all, from exquisite cuisine from around the world, breathtaking skyline views, vivacious summer festivals, robust transportation, a music scene and nightlife for all tastes. In our office, we work very hard, but we also make sure to have fun. The fact that there are many HQ offices close to our office makes it very convenient for our customer-facing teams to get their jobs done.

Chicago is an emerging tech hub, and more people are considering moving to Chicago. Tell us something about the city that you love and that others outside of Chicago might be surprised to hear or not know.
Just as Chicago can be -20 degrees in the winter (January 2019), our summers are warm and get between 80 to 100 degrees. We also have a large LGBTQ community which continues to grow every year and the vibes in this city are so positive and full of love.

Lastly, tell us your favorite “non-touristy” thing to do in Chicago.
There are multiple summer festivals in Chicago’s North Side which are some of my personal favorites; I look forward to them every summer. I also enjoy some touristy things. For instance, Lake Michigan is so grand it gives the impression of an ocean view. We have a DIVVY bike rental system which can be used anywhere in Chicago. You can experience our 18.5 mi Chicago Lakefront Trail by biking, walking, jogging, or skateboarding. It is my #1 recommendation for touristy to-dos.
