Our “Second City” blog series places the spotlight on DocuSign employees based in Chicago and Warrenville who tell us about why they decided to join DocuSign, what they do here, what it’s like living and working in Chicago (an emerging tech hub) and more. At DocuSign, we want employees to look back at their time here and say they did the work of their life at DocuSign. This week we sat down with Ernesto C. in Solutions Engineering based in Chicago to learn more about his career.
Are you originally from the Chicago area?
I am. I’ve spent the majority of my life living in the Pilsen area. Pilsen is a vibrant community really close to the Loop and is great place to live today. I now live in the suburbs with my family.
What do you do at DocuSign?
I manage a team of solution engineers. We focus on providing technical pre-sales support during sales cycles, and specifically, the team delivers demos PoCs (proof of concept) and technical guidance in the effort to earn new business. We directly support our local sales team which in turn supports the larger DocuSign North America sales team.
When/why did you decide to pursue a career into Solutions Engineering?
I majored in Network Security and Information Assurance, so I always knew that I wanted to do something in tech. What I didn’t know was that I could use my tech skills in a sales capacity. Ever since I figured out that the Solution Engineer field existed, I realigned my career path and have been doing SE work for the past few years.
What excites you most about working at DocuSign in Chicago?
I feel that I joined a great organization when I joined SpringCM and got to bring all my friends, and now I’m making new ones at DocuSign which acquired SpringCM last fall! The potential for the future of our System of Agreement is what excites me the most because DocuSign has the opportunity to lead and define the space.
Based on your observations, what are the advantages of working in our Chicago office?
Geographically, it makes business travel easier. I frequently travel to the East and West coast, and I like being a 2-4 hours flight away from most places. Also, the blend of SpringCM and DocuSign cultures creates a fun work environment because the teams have a lot in common, and yet we are learning a lot from each other. It feels like the DocuSign and SpringCM teams are creating something new, and it is fun being in that ambiance.
Why should somebody consider working at DocuSign Chicago and building their career here?
If you can get through the usual winter business (and you can), the city has a lot to offer. Chicago and the surrounding areas have a great vibe, great food and a balanced cost of living.
Chicago is an emerging tech hub and more people are considering moving to Chicago. Tell us something about the city that you love and that others outside of Chicago might be surprised to hear or not know.
Folks always talk about the cold snowy winters and the Chicago-style deep dish, but the Spring and Fall are amazing, and the Summer festival season is a lot of fun. The Chicago-style “square-cut” thin crust pizza is also great.
Lastly, tell us your favorite “non-touristy” thing to do in Chicago?
Going to Canton Regio in the Pilsen neighborhood and ordering carne asada by the kilo. Canton is a little-known Mexican restaurant, but it offers the best Mexican food I’ve ever had and has an amazing group setting.
