Our “Second City” blog series places the spotlight on DocuSign employees based in Chicago and Warrenville who tell us about why they decided to join DocuSign, what they do here, what it’s like living and working in Chicago (an emerging tech hub), and more. At DocuSign, we want employees to look back at their time here and say they did the work of their life at DocuSign. This week we sat down with Brad H. in Sales based in Chicago to learn more about his career.

Are you originally from the Chicago area?
I was born and raised in Seattle. I lived in the same inner-city neighborhood my whole life before recently moving to Chicago. The opportunity to help DocuSign expand in such a great city and to challenge myself in new ways is what led to my move.

What do you do at DocuSign?
I build sales teams with the goal of helping our sellers reach personal and professional success.  And… I laugh a lot with the amazing people around me.

When and why did you decide to pursue a career in Sales?
Sales is the ultimate career that puts every individual in control of their earnings, success time and career path. In sales, everything is under your control and every outcome is influenced by something you did. While there are a lot of opportunities that come with this career, there is a high degree of stress and responsibility for the company’s well-being.

What excites you most about working at DocuSign in Chicago?
Chicago is an amazing city that is just beginning to ride the tech wave. I saw the positive impact tech had in Seattle over the past ten years, and I firmly believe it will also have a positive impact in Chicago. Being part of building DocuSign’s presence in Chicago and working with the local Chicago talent is an honor.

What are the advantages of working our Chicago office versus other offices?
We’re just getting started in Chicago which means the opportunities are limitless, and the ability each person has to influence outcomes is far more than any other DocuSign North American office. From building culture to creating local DocuSign IMPACT events, those people who join the DocuSign Chicago team early in its growth will have the opportunity to have a powerful influence.

Chicago is an emerging tech hub and more people are considering moving to Chicago. Tell us something about the city that surprised you that others outside of Chicago might not know.
Ok, maybe it’s just because I’m new to the city, but the people here are so nice!  I came here knowing Chicago was a big city and figured it would be a typical “big city vibe” of everyone being too busy doing their own thing.  It’s not like that at all!  The people are amazing and have been incredibly welcoming.

Lastly, what’s your advice to anyone thinking of making a move to Chicago like you did?
Moving can be a daunting obstacle or a wonderful challenge or both. Chicago is a city full of positive energy and welcoming people which makes it one of the best cities to live in when you’re “from somewhere else”.  So, embrace the challenge and come join us in the Windy City.  Also, buy a heavy winter jacket.
