Q: What do you do at DocuSign?
I’m a software engineer on the Partner Integrations team. I work on DocuSign for Salesforce and have been here since the end of August. My main responsibilities include creating new features, enhancements, and helping resolve high priority customer issues related to DocuSign for Salesforce.
Q: What do your friends and family think you do?
I’m the first engineer in my family so no one understands what I do. They know I work for DocuSign because most of my family has used DocuSign in some capacity, but they would have a hard time explaining my role beyond that. They often tell me that they admire what I do, and I have even had the opportunity to teach my girlfriend’s students about coding in their classroom.
Q: What is the best thing about working at DocuSign?
I like the team chemistry and really appreciate that everyone is so approachable. I’ve had to work with people from other teams, and there’s never been a situation where I felt uncomfortable about asking a stranger a question. Another perk is the great view and how well they treat their employees.
Q: How is that team different than other teams at DocuSign? Is there anything special about your team’s dynamic?
Our team is relatively small so it’s easy to collaborate. Here at DocuSign, everyone is working on the same level. There’s no defined leader, aside from my boss. Everyone who I’ve worked with is helpful and works hard.
Q: What is the best advice you can give to somebody starting a new job in your department at DocuSign?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to not know everything, because I certainly didn’t know everything. Every process is different, so have the willingness to adapt and be flexible.
Q: What traits do you most admire in your colleagues at DocuSign?
I admire that my colleagues are approachable. I really can’t put enough emphasis on that, since I’ve worked in places where people are not approachable. It really makes all the difference in a positive and welcoming work environment, because I’ve unfortunately experienced the opposite.
Q: What traits do you think your DocuSign colleagues most admire in you?
I think they admire that I have a go-getter mentality. Even though I might not have experience in tackling certain issues, I’m not afraid to dive into it and come up with solutions. I don’t really shy away from anything complicated, and always embrace challenges.
Q: What is something most of your colleagues at DocuSign don’t know about you?
Most of my colleagues don’t know that I’m a self-taught engineer. I graduated with a business degree, and I was an analyst for about a year, however it was not a great fit for me. I was always intrigued by what engineers did, so I decided to start researching and teaching myself programming languages. Then, I got a position as a Salesforce administrator/developer, and was thrown into the fire, and learned on the fly.
Q: What is your favorite snack from the DocuSign kitchen?
My favorite snack is definitely the Kit-Kats, they’re a great mid-day treat. My backup snack is the 100 Grand candy bar.
Q: If you were not working at DocuSign and could do anything in the world, what would you be doing/do next?
If I were not working for Docusign, I’d work for a nonprofit and help disadvantaged youth by teaching them the benefits of working in tech, and guiding them through the process of going to college. Going to school has done a lot for me, so I’d want to forward that opportunity. I mentioned earlier that I had the opportunity to volunteer in my girlfriend’s classroom to teach her young students about coding. I really enjoyed that experience of being able to expose children to computer science, who may otherwise not get exposed to that. The children loved learning about it, but were convinced it was magic, and wanted to know more.
Q: What is the secret for your to happiness?
I genuinely like taking on challenges and solving problems. It’s fulfilling knowing that my work directly impacts individuals and companies in a positive way.
Our “We Are DocuSign,” blog series places the spotlight on employees from a variety of departments and provides a peek into what it’s like to work at DocuSign. This week, we sat down with Ken N., Software Engineer, Platform Architecture, to chat about his day-to-day work, what he admires about his colleagues, and something none of his coworkers know about him.
