Advancing the Adoption of Electronic Signatures

In 2020, we will mark 20 years since the Electronic Signature in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN) was signed into law. ESIGN established a consistent foundation across the U.S. for legal agreements in the age of electronically enabled commerce. Its core principles derived from the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA), which gave the states a model to avoid passing well-intended but inconsistent e-signature laws that could have ultimately hindered innovation.

As the leader in e-signature and the world’s number one agreement cloud company, at DocuSign we have the privilege of working with more than 500,000 customers and hundreds of millions of users worldwide. We continue to innovate for those customers and with them based on their ongoing feedback.

In support of that innovation, our own Danny Zollman, Senior Corporate Counsel at DocuSign, serves as Vice Chair of the board of directors for the Electronic Signature and Records Association (ESRA). ESRA is an industry trade association for the advancement and adoption of electronic signatures and digital transactions. ESRA’s mission is to further public policy and educate its members and the general public on current legal, regulatory and operational issues regarding the use of electronic signatures and records. DocuSign has been an ESRA member and has participated on ESRA’s board since the organization was first established in 2006.

DocuSign supports and encourages ESRA’s mission, and aligns with ESRA’s guiding principles including the emphasis on technology neutrality, interoperability, removal of barriers, consumer enablement, non-discrimination, and innovation.

Whether it’s a small business wanting to send a document for signature from Google Docs, or a global corporation needing to integrate Salesforce, SAP, and Workday into a unified system of agreement, interoperability is key. The DocuSign Agreement Cloud integrates with over 350 third party applications, lowering the cost and risk of making things work together, and accelerating time to results.
