Q: What do you do at DocuSign?
I’m the Sr. Director of the Enterprise Solution Engineering Team. My team partners with sales to demonstrate the value of DocuSign to our customers and prospects. We have the unique skill of being comfortable with both technology and people, and we interact with customers on a daily basis over the phone and onsite. Our job is to identify customers’ business problems and show them the value DocuSign can deliver for their organization.
Q: What is the best thing about working at DocuSign?
Definitely the solution engineering team. They’re the greatest group of people I’ve ever worked with. They’re very collaborative, and everyone has each other’s backs. It’s a “we, not me” mentality here. In sales, you don’t hear that very often.
When I started here about 2.5 years ago, the team was 10-12 people. It was really something special. It’s been a huge focus for me as we’ve grown and scaled the company to maintain that culture.
I came from a larger company and the mentality there was: “Okay, I can help, but what’s in it for me?” However, from the day I started here at DocuSign, there’s never been that kind of attitude. If you need someone to help, it’s no questions asked.
Q: How is your team different than other teams at DocuSign? Is there anything special about your team’s dynamic?
Yes. The majority of my team works remotely and does not go into the office every day. We’re located across the US so part of my job is keeping everyone motivated and engaged. I need to make sure that people aren’t burning out or traveling too much. When I see someone doing an exceptional job, it’s important that I’m able to promote that. If there are issues, I make sure I’m dealing with them as quickly as possible. I’m getting people on the phone and putting the fires out quickly.
Because we all work remotely, I get the team together for weekly meetings. Every week, we have a meeting with our team, and every other week we have a meeting with the global solution engineering team. It’s a great way for us to share best practices, present challenges, and extract info from the broader team.
Q: What is the best advice you can give to somebody starting a new job in your department?
Build good relationships. Have a positive attitude. Have a strong teamwork skills and a great work ethic. Those skills will help you be successful at DocuSign.
Having the “we, not me” attitude I mentioned earlier is critical. It has a large impact on the relationships we have with sales. We need to have a good cadence and trusted partnership with the sales team. In previous roles Ive had, some people were able to get by putting in only 60-70 percent. DocuSign is smaller, things move quickly, but it’s also very transparent. If you’re not pulling your weight, it becomes clear very quickly. The broader team is here to support you, but you have to be working hard.
Q: What traits do you most admire in your colleagues at DocuSign?
Their selflessness. I’ve never come into a team that is just so willing to take the shirt off their back. The SE team runs together here – Commercial, Enterprise, North America or EMEA it doesn’t matter we are one unit. I work closely with my peers to make sure we are on the same page as much as possible. Because we are supporting a sales team, we’re both incredibly collaborative and very driven. People work their butts off. If we have to work through the night to get something done, we’ll do it. We’re always willing to help out for the greater good because ultimately, we’re focused on results and taking those results to the next level.
Q: What traits do you think your DocuSign colleagues most admire in you?
I try to lead by example. I’m expecting the teams to work extremely hard, be collaborative, and have relationship skills that are at a certain level. If they do that, I’ll fight for them and sometimes that means flying to San Francisco and sitting in offices until things get done. Part of being remote means I can’t necessarily sit next to my management every day, but I’ll still do whatever it takes to make things happen. I don’t rest on my laurels. I’m constantly looking for ways to make our team as strategic as possible in the sales cycle.
Q: What is something most of your colleagues at DocuSign don’t know about you?
I have a second degree black belt in KenShin Kan karate. I studied it for about 10 years. In general, I really enjoy sports. I played rugby in college and played a lot of sports growing up. I feel like many of the life lessons I’ve learned have come from playing sports.
Q: What is the best project you ever worked on at DocuSign and why?
I worked on a project where the vision was to create customer experience demos so people could see how DocuSign works for each industry. For example, we had a financial services portal, a healthcare and life sciences portal, etc. The idea was to help our customers envision a real day in the life experience of using DocuSign. We wanted to showcase the value of a digital transformation, whether it was through the customer experience or an internal business process. We came up with a whole series of use cases.
The project helped customers understand the value of DocuSign so much more quickly. It also helps my team work much more productively, because we have a library of DocuSign use cases at our fingertips that we can easily showcase to our customers.
Q: If you were not working at DocuSign and could do anything in the world, what would you be doing/do next?
I would love to be teaching solution engineering at a business school. I don’t think enough undergrads or even grad students are aware that this is a career path, especially for women in technology. It’s funny, because I live in Philly and there’s a lot of colleges around here. Yet I’m just now starting to explore how I could get in front of some of the classes to introduce the topic. That would also give me the chance to spend summers in Greece drinking frappes and ouzo! I love it there!
Q: What is the secret for you to happiness?
My family, for sure. My husband, my two girls, my lifestyle. I love living in Philadelphia. I love being able to walk everywhere and the everyday experiences you have in the city.
