DocuSign Settles Patent Infringement Suit
Outcome affirms validity of DocuSign’s electronic signature patent and sets precedent for future intellectual property enforcement
SEATTLE, WA – June 13, 2006 –SEATTLE, WA (June 13, 2006) – DocuSign, Inc. (www.docusign.com), the leading on-demand, electronic signature service, today announced that it has successfully defended one of its core patents in an intellectual property lawsuit against Yozons, Inc. The federal district court lawsuit was concluded in a settlement reached on January 23, 2006. Under the terms of the settlement, Yozons is required to pay DocuSign a royalty on revenues generated from its online e-signature solution. The settlement also confirmed the validity and enforceability of DocuSign’s patent (US patent No. 6,289,460).
The patented DocuSign technology revolves around the fundamental way that electronic documents are managed and signed using the Internet. DocuSign perfected the patent in 2001, which defines the process for legally signing an electronic document using a server on the Internet and a standard web browser. This groundbreaking new process allows authorized document signers to securely view and sign electronic documents online without the need for complex software, traditional digital certificates or special signing pads. The patented DocuSign technology is a compelling alternative to an older “digital certificate” process that required encrypting documents and sending them back and forth by e-mail.
“We are extremely pleased with the outcome of this case,” said Court Lorenzini, DocuSign’s CEO. “DocuSign has made an immense investment of time and resources to create breakthrough technologies and to provide the highest quality electronic signature solution on the market today. We believe it is imperative to vigorously defend our core intellectual property to ensure that other providers do not compromise the integrity or the quality of our products. The Yozons’ settlement confirms DocuSign’s investment as well as its ability to successfully enforce its intellectual property rights.”
According to Lorenzini, DocuSign will continue to keep a close eye on the marketplace to determine if any other companies are infringing on its patents.
