We also celebrated the Congressional Resolutions designating June 30 as National ESIGN Day.

DocuSign CEO and president Steve King welcomed more than 300 attendees with the news that DocuSign led a coalition to make June 30 National ESIGN Day. Both houses of the U.S. Congress passed the resolutions to make this happen (see the blog post link for details). The ESIGN Summit began with a special message from Representative Jim McDermott (D-WA) who commented on the transformation the ESIGN Act has had on how we conduct transactions and commerce today, and applauded DocuSign’s leadership in driving e-signature adoption to increase productivity and efficiency for businesses and government. In the video below, these remarks take place from 1:57- 2:52.

In his address titled “Embracing Our Common Humanity,” President Bill Clinton greeted the attendees, citing a number of significant anniversaries his foundation observed.

Along with presenting a balanced budget to Congress and the Middle East peace process, he noted that the ESIGN Act will have one of the largest impacts on how people live and work. President Clinton spoke about the top challenges the world faces today, and the ways information technology can be used to better the lives of people around the world. He expressed his belief in the transformative power of the Internet and said he was concerned most about expanding its use worldwide to connect more people and remove additional barriers:

We’ve learned throughout all of human history that trust is the basis for all commerce…We have to work harder to get countries not to block it, rather than keeping bad apples out of it

Next Gary Thomas, first vice president-elect, National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), discussed the importance of relationships in the real estate industry. As the largest trade organization in America, NAR made a strategic financial investment in DocuSign in November 2009 through its Second Century Ventures fund.

NAR’s 1.1 million REALTORS® are helping people realize the American Dream of home ownership. Our alliance with DocuSign enables REALTORS® and their clients to track business from any place any time. Now real estate closings are radically faster, contracts don’t have to be faxed back and forth, and home buyers and sellers don’t have to come into the office to sign papers—they can even be signed from an airplane 30,000 feet in the sky

Thomas said, referring to a recent San Francisco Chronicle story about a couple who e-signed their real estate documents midflight with DocuSign.

Kendall Collins, chief marketing officer at salesforce.com, shared the company’s vision for Cloud 2, collaboration that leverages mobility and social networking features popularized by Facebook and Twitter-like profiles, status updates and real-time feeds to empower enterprises with a new level of productivity only possible in the cloud. In speaking how electronic signatures are moving to Cloud 2, Collins said traditional wet signatures are slow, provide no tracking and are not environmentally friendly:

I am happy to say that the last mile of every transaction is now done in the cloud. We are delighted today to be talking about our relationship with DocuSign, a leader in electronic signatures.

DocuSign founder and chief strategy officer, Tom Gonser, joined salesforce.com on stage to demonstrate how integrating DocuSign’s electronic signature platform with Salesforce Chatter can foster collaboration within an entire organization, sending alerts when a contract is opened, signed and when a deal is won in real-time.

Aaron Levie, co-founder and chief executive officer of Box.net, described the new workplace that takes place outside the walls of a single organization between networks of vendors and partners and business, where content is centralized in the cloud to integrate, manage and access online. Levie announced:

We are excited about the ability to now easily transact business in the cloud through our partnership with DocuSign. The millions of documents on Box.net can now be signed and transacted with DocuSign.

In conclusion, DocuSign’s Tom Gonser spoke about the evolution of how business transactions have been signed through the ages and showcased DocuSign’s latest innovations that are adding new levels of flexibility, collaboration and mobility to core business processes of completing business transactions. Gonser related that electronic signature technology has moved beyond just signing documents and that DocuSign has created a platform that manages the entire document electronic signature process—with powerful collaboration and negotiation tools to accelerate business from anywhere, anytime.

He demonstrated the first Apple® iPad electronic signature application, illustrating how easy it is to access documents for signature via handheld devices and the rich real-time reporting DocuSign offers.

Attendees praised DocuSign for driving the National ESIGN Day resolution and taking the industry lead on raising awareness of the key role of electronic signatures in the growth of commerce trend toward more environmentally friendly and efficient business practices.

DocuSign chairman Keith Krach commended the event for bringing together industry luminaries and leaders in markets such as finance, e-commerce and real estate:

DocuSign is not only leading the industry with the most advanced product, the most strategic partnerships and the greatest number of customers, by creating the industry discussion about the future of business transactions, DocuSign is validating its position as the market leader and global standard in electronic signature.

<img src="http://www.docusign.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Screen-shot-2010-07-15-at-7.56.21-PM-300x200.png" alt="eSignature Makes Summer Sizzle!
Electronic Signatures in Real Estate: Doing Real Estate Deals Anywhere, With Mobile
Inman News: DocuSign beefs up mobile capabilities: Users can digitize documents with iPhone camera

…The latest version of DocuSign’s electronic signature management platform offers the ability to markup documents during negotiations, and also includes “designed for mobile” functionality for Apple’s iPhone and iPad and Android mobile devices, the company said today.

DocuSign for iPhone and iPad allows users to access documents from Google Docs, Box.net, and other cloud-based services. Apple iPhone users can digitize paper documents by snapping pictures of them with their phone, allowing them to add “sign here” tabs and collect electronic signatures from their clients.

“E-mail to signature” capabilities allow users to forward documents they receive as e-mail attachments to an e-mail address for conversion into DocuSign “electronic envelopes” that can be signed from anywhere in the world….

…”With the introduction of digital signatures, you can now sit at your desk and send out contracts for signature anywhere in the world,” [Kevin] Gallagher notes that with digital signatures – he uses DocuSign – you don’t have to “print documents, make arrangements to meet clients, obtain signatures and forward the documents to the buyer or seller. …

Close it in the Cloud: Electronic Signatures Enables You To Close Deals Entirely in the Cloud
Cloud Computing Journal: DocuSign and Salesforce.com Create Cloud Transactions for Customers

…“Our work with DocuSign is moving the last mile of business transactions, contract signatures, to Cloud 2,” said Kendall Collins, chief marketing officer, salesforce.com. “Bringing together Salesforce CRM and Salesforce Chatter with DocuSign’s e-signature technology will deliver real-time collaboration around contract workflow processes, helping customers close deals entirely in the cloud.”

As demonstrated last week at Cloudforce 2010 in San Jose by salesforce.com’s Marc Benioff and DocuSign’s Tom Gonser, the DocuSign eSignature service offers users the ability to leverage data within Salesforce CRM and is enabled with Salesforce Chatter for real-time visibility and updates. Users can follow others and follow deals as the information is pushed in real-time. Whether it is a contract, acknowledgement or approval requiring one or more signatures, virtually everyone within an organization needs to get a document signed. With DocuSign being Salesforce Chatter-enabled, employees across the entire organization can collaborate during the e-signing process, delivering cost and workflow efficiencies. …

Cloud Computing.Info: DocuSign partners with Salesforce and Box.net
DocuSign in the News" width="300" height="168" />
…The whole process is completely web-based, and customers can access the DocuSign platform for document and signatures management through a PC, a tablet or a smartphone.

Last week the company announced an OEM partnership with Salesforce, to integrate the eSignature technology in CRM and the new Chatter service.
The integration with DocuSign will be also available for those customers that will create custom applications on the Salesforce Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) cloud: Force.com

Also last week DocuSign secured a similar partnership with Box.net, a popular storage-as-a-service cloud computing provider in the consumer market.
Box.net goes beyond file sharing and synchronization, offering project collaboration and workflow management for business customers. Box.net customers can now sign all their documents through the eSignature process. …

Electronic Signature: A Technology Trend
VentureBeat: DocuSign adds more tools to make printed contracts obsolete

…Seattle-based DocuSign today announced of the latest update to its electronic signature tools. The big vision, according to founder and chief strategy officer Tom Gonser, is to treat electronic signatures as a platform (yes, tech companies love that word) rather than “just a single e-sign product.”

In other words, DocuSign wants to do more than provide the technology to replace handwritten signatures with electronic ones. Today, for example, it’s revealing new collaborative features. Previously, DocuSign users would send out a document for signature, and the recipient could either sign it or refuse. That doesn’t reflect what is often a more complicated process filled with last-minute changes, and it creates a risk where, in Gonser’s words, customers will say, “Let’s put on the brakes, let’s print it out,” and therefore “fall out of the electronic process.” …

ZDNet: DocuSign launches new tools to entice greater e-signature adoption

…If you’ve ever had to sign your life away to buy or sell a house, take out a loan or finalize a sales agreement, you know what a tedious process it can be to actually sit and sign your name over and over and over again.

What makes it really unfortunate is that there is a better way. And it’s been around for exactly 10 years. It was on June 30, 2000 that then-President Bill Clinton signed the Electronic Signatures in Global National Commerce (ESIGN) Act.

To commemorate the occasion, Docusign, a provider of an e-signature platform, is releasing of Docusign Spring 10, a major upgrade to its service. It’s adding things like voice biometrics as another method of identity confirmation and Agent role, a tool that allows a real estate agent, for example, to manage and review documents for a client and then submit them. …

PC Magazine: DocuSign Releases Updated Version of E-Signature Software

…DocuSign announced the new software as part of its ESIGN customer summit here. The company asked President Bill Clinton to speak about his work with electronic signatures in conjunction with his foundation’s charity work, while Salesforce.com also announced that it had made a strategic investment into DocuSign alongside an existing investment by the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

We’ve come a long way from my parents’ generation, where a fax would have been welcome technology for them, said Gary Thomas, the 2011 vice-president elect of the NAR. …

While sun and sailing are hot this summer, so are eSignatures – you can sign with the fast, complete and trusted electronic signature platform provider.

DocuSign Integrates New Collaboration, Biometric Authentication and Enhanced Mobile Functionality to Accelerate Business in the Cloud

We’re announcing the availability of DocuSign Spring ‘10, the latest release of the company’s award-winning e-signature service. This version offers unprecedented capabilities for signers to negotiate critical elements of transactions during the signing process. Other advancements include two-factor phone authentication, agent-managed transaction support, enhanced PowerForms 2.0 embeddable forms and dynamic form fields. In addition, this version offers enhanced Designed for Mobile functionality specifically for Apple® iPhone® and iPad®, and Google® AndroidTM mobile devices.

More than ever, organizations are seeking on-demand solutions like DocuSign to automate core business processes, reduce costs and increase productivity. From a quick electronic signature on a sales contract to a complex agreement requiring multi-party signatures, data collection and specific workflow, DocuSign has the most complete solution available. Customers can choose the right tool for the job— all from within the DocuSign platform.

Tom Gonser, founder and chief strategy officer at DocuSign, describes DocuSign’s transition from an electronic signature service to an eSignature platform:

DocuSign Spring ‘10 provides support for new types of transactions—helping to streamline new workflows and remove more paper from business processes to saving our customers more money and making them even more competitive. With this release, DocuSign is changing what companies expect from an electronic signature service. It’s not just about getting a signature anymore; it’s about a robust platform that manages the entire process— authentication, workflow, form data collection, collaboration, signing and secure storage.

DocuSign Spring ‘10 At-a-Glance

“Collaborate to Close” – Collaboration Services Package
These new capabilities offers DocuSign users support a broad array of business transactions that involve collaboration as well as signing.

Negotiation/Document Markup. For the first time ever, signers have the option to negotiate critical elements of agreements on the fly faster, easier and more efficiently than paper. DocuSign has eliminated the problems associated with paper negotiations—no more difficult to read photocopies or undecipherable handwritten edits. Signers can ‘white out’ and initial small changes digitally. All changes are tracked, and the system automatically asks all parties to initial all changes. The document remains neat, easy to read and secure. Collaboration is an option that can be applied to the entire document, to specific sections of the document or locked from any changes at all.

Agent Role. Many business transactions are managed by agents, attorneys, real estate agents and brokers. Documents are originated, but sent to agents to manage the review and collection of signatures. Now using DocuSign’s Agent Role, agents can receive agreements and electronically manage the transaction for their clients. Agents may review the contract for their customers, assign recipients and even add additional documents or signatures.

Collaborate in the Cloud. Through a partnership with Box.net, the leading online collaboration tool, the DocuSign eSignature service will be available to all Box.net users to offer a complete end-to-end collaboration through close process. Box.net allows users to create and collaborate on content in the Cloud. Adding the power of DocuSign offers Box.net users a fast and simple way to close agreements in one seamless digital workflow.

Biometric Phone Authentication. When signer identity is important, DocuSign offers advanced, state of the art biometric phone authentication. This new authentication option delivers strong two-factor authentication with the ease of answering the phone. DocuSign’s system places a call to the signer to validate identity and then records a biometric voice print. The biometric voice print can be used much like a fingerprint if there is ever a challenge.

Dynamic Data Collection. DocuSign converts ordinary static forms into dynamic forms. Based on input provided by the signer, additional fields appear to ensure right data is collected for every situation. Any DocuSign SecureField™ form field can become dynamic including text, multi-line, checkbox, radio button or drop down. Dynamic forms can even be used to manage signature authority by ensuring only those with the proper title are approved to sign.

Enhanced Designed for Mobile
Today, busy professionals are demanding services that offer the convenience to conduct business while on the move. These services must be cost effective and flexible, with the ability to adapt to any environment, including quickly-evolving mobile platforms. DocuSign’s Designed for Mobile extends interoperability with a broad variety of handheld devices. This rich functionality offers fast and complete document signing and viewing on any smart phone through DocuSign’s optimized mobile browser. DocuSign Designed for Mobile users can access a broad spectrum of new DocuSign features to increase workflow efficiency, accelerate sales cycles and increase revenue.

DocuSign for iPhone and DocuSign for iPad. Now, Apple mobile devices have unprecedented sending, signing and viewing capabilities. With new DocuSign for iPhone and DocuSign for iPad, more than 8.9 million Apple users can conduct business regardless of geography or time zone. Users can access documents from enterprise Google docs, Box.net and others. Whether it’s a simple NDA or a complex global sales agreement requiring multi-party signatures, DocuSign helps companies operate greener, faster and more profitably by removing the hurdles associated with the signing process and offering more ways for users to access and complete their transactions online. Apple users can even snap a picture of a document, drag and drop Sign Here tabs onto it and send it for electronic signature. Plus, users have detailed real-time performance reporting.

PowerForms 2.0. Users can easily convert forms to DocuSign and integrate them into a website with no programming. DocuSign has made it easy to turn any document into a smart electronic signature document, complete with options such as workflow and authentication. With a few mouse clicks, users can add powerful forms to a website that collect data and a signature, then deliver the completed form to any destination.

Email to Signature. Email attachments requesting signatures can easily become a DocuSign electronic envelope. Signers simply forward the DocuSign Envelope to drafts@docusign.net. An envelope is automatically created and users can sign the attachments from anywhere in the world.

These new enhancements raise the bar on electronic signature services, and demonstrate DocuSign’s strong leadership in the eSignature market. DocuSign currently commands more than 70 percent of the SaaS-based electronic signature services market. The company serves all types of markets with more than 4.5 million unique customer signatures worldwide.

Earlier this week, we attended Cloudforce San Jose to discuss electronic signature and how DocuSign for Salesforce fit into the larger Salesforce ecosystem – we were chosen as one of four apps to be on stage to demo from over 100,000 total apps on Force.com. With more than 2,000 people at the event and more than 10,000 people watching live, we were excited to present a paperless solution that can handle complex workflows. However, the main star was Chatter and its capabilities stole the show – in eight months, Salesforce delivered a nontrivial platform application that further extends collaboration within an organization.

Social applications such as Facebook and Twitter enabled consumers to collaborate – to share ideas regarding purchasing decisions or make and share social plans and content. Chatter provides the thread to connect individuals, groups and departments within the greater enterprise in a private, secure and trusted manner.

Beyond enabling connections between key individuals within an organization, Chatter also enables connections between a business and its customers. For example, Chatter enables a company to publish and make searchable its knowledge base. This will enable customers to help themselves if they were to have an issue and look to search engines to find the answer.

Collaborating in the Cloud With Electronic Signatures

With our Spring ‘10 release, we also enabled the power of collaboration. Collaborate to Close enables last minute negotiations – a new closing date, a change in delivery address, or other changes while managing the process to ensure that everyone initials to accept the changes so there are no surprises. Without the fax of a fax of a fax, Collaborate to Close provides speed, cleanliness and security for DocuSign electronic signature customers.

The Real-Time Success Cloud: DocuSign for Salesforce

Of course, we enjoyed talking about how DocuSign for Salesforce provides the smart, secure way to electronically sign, track and store documents. With DocuSign for Salesforce, you’ll get insight into the status of your deals, accelerate revenue by turning an Opportunity into an eSigned Contract, and know exactly when your contract was opened, eSigned and Closed in the Cloud!

DocuSign for Salesforce Chatter Enabled provides you with real time Chatter feeds on your DocuSign deals. Follow Account, Contact, Opportunities or Leads and know the latest status without needing to lookup the record!

We’re glad we got to meet a number of you at the DocuSign booth after the keynote. In case you missed us in San Jose, register to join us for the 2010 ESIGN Summit or register for a DocuSign for Salesforce demo!

We’re excited to share the latest partner application from @Ware, Inc.—eDottedLine, which seamlessly integrates DocuSign eSignature service within Microsoft Outlook for a complete email document signing solution. eDottedLine extends DocuSign’s functionality within Microsoft Office applications to streamline business processes and increase efficiencies. eDottedLine from @Ware, Inc., RAMP Group’s eProcess for SharePoint succeeds by delivering an end-to-end document signing and management system. James Harvey, president and chief executive officer of @Ware, shares his thoughts on integrating DocuSign’s eSignature service within Microsoft Outlook:

DocuSign has ascended rapidly as the gold standard for online e-signature technology while Outlook has been the gold standard for desktop communication for the past 16 years. The synergistic benefits of bringing these two technologies together are self-evident and compelling.

@Ware eDottedLine With DocuSign At-a-Glance

eDottedLine is an add-in that extends DocuSign’s eSignature technology to Microsoft Outlook. This powerful application increases productivity by marrying the convenience of Outlook into the DocuSign e-signature process. Outlook’s collaborative model is integrated into this workflow, creating an intuitive and precise end-to-end experience. With eDottedLine, e-signatures are transacted as email messages:

A wizard guides the user through one of three possible DocuSign processes: free form signing, browser-based tagging and full template support. All predefined template settings are back-filled into the Outlook e-mail message to create a complete record of each e-signature transaction.

Transaction receipts are created as Outlook Tasks with due dates set to the expiration dates of the corresponding DocuSign envelopes.

By synchronizing these tasks, the completion status of each envelope is updated. For each completed transaction, a final PDF document copy is downloaded and archived automatically. These task receipts provide a dashboard view of the user’s e-signature transactions and allow the user to benefit from Outlook notifications.

Outlook Contacts can be synchronized with the DocuSign Address Book with just a single mouse-click. Specific Outlook Contact folders and/or Contact items can be included or excluded giving the user complete control and flexibility. Outlook recipients are mapped to DocuSign users and Outlook’s rich address resolution is extended to the DocuSign transaction.

@Ware eDottedLine generates a transaction receipt as an Outlook Task so you can conveniently manage your document.

@Ware’s plug-and-play architecture allows e-signature transactions to be recorded within other third-party Web services. A broadcasting agent allows the same documents to be sent to many recipients with just a single e-mail message, which includes distribution list support. Tom Gonser, founder and vice president of product strategy at DocuSign, provides his view on how eDottedLine will affect the Microsoft Office environment:

The release of @Ware’s eDottedLine further extends the capabilities of DocuSign eSignature service within the Microsoft Office environment. This unique application makes it faster and easier than ever to get documents signed online, and to share data within other core Microsoft Office applications. DocuSign is pleased to partner with innovators like @Ware to make it possible for organizations across all industries to operate more efficiently within the Windows eco-system.

Did you know that this month has been a busy one for electronic signature in the news? Going paperless and using DocuSign was named the number one way to use technology to save time and money in Inman News.

Inman News: 5 Ways to Use Tech To Save Time and Money by Katie Lance

1. Go paperless. One of the biggest trends I am seeing are agents using DocuSign. DocuSign is an amazing product that really helps agents be more efficient and save more time and money. Clients love it, and as a bonus, it helps you to go “green.”

My biggest piece of advice for agents is to embrace technology. It’s not always easy, but we are living in an amazing age. Think of the world before we had the Internet, compared to now — isn’t it amazing?! Don’t be afraid of technology; embrace it and it will save you more time and money in the long haul.

DocuSign has partnered with many other real estate technology providers to enable you to keep your processes paperless. Click to learn more about our real estate partners.

Recently, Adobe announced an e-Signature SaaS offering, which prompted commentary from our own Tom Gonser. TechFlash published Tom’s response, following their reporting on Adobe’s new electronic signature service.

TechFlash: DocuSign to Adobe: Thanks for validating the e-signature market by John Cook

Last Friday, we reported on Adobe’s new offering in the electronic signatures arena, a move that we suggested could strike some fear into the hearts of the folks behind DocuSign. But the Seattle electronic signature startup is hardly running scared. In fact, founder and vice president of product strategy Tom Gonser said in a follow-up statement that his initial reaction to Adobe’s new offering was: “What took them so long?”

“Seeing Adobe enter the market validates what we’ve known for years—this is a huge market, and our SaaS-based product delivers tremendous value very quickly. Seeing Adobe abandon software-based electronic signature software in favor of this new service-based approach illustrates the rapid decline of software-based PKI digital signature solutions, which are too complex and costly to administer and manage. As the trusted leader in SaaS-based electronic signatures with over four million users, and the established standard in important markets like Financial Services and Real Estate (where the National Association for Realtors (NAR) has named DocuSign as the exclusive provider to the entire REALTOR market), we have a sizeable market lead over Adobe.

If you compare our service to the new Adobe service, it is immediately obvious that we have a sizable product lead also. DocuSign provides much more than just a signature. We also provide authentication, workflow, data collection and collaboration—all critical components of a business-class e-signature platform. The Adobe service has none of this. So we see this announcement as the best of both worlds. A large company just validated the market we created more than six years ago is huge, and it offers a solution that is not competitive. The awareness created by Adobe will accelerate DocuSign’s business even more.”

If you want to try DocuSign’s free electronic signature service, DocuSign Lite, go to DocuSign.com and use the widget on the right hand side of your screen. You can also use DocuSign Lite as a Firefox plug in or as an iGoogle gadget.

Mortgage Technology Magazine mentioned DocuSign’s “Designed for Mobile” functionality, as it enables users to eSign from their mobile devices, including iPhone, Blackberry, Android, and Windows Mobile phones.

Mortgage Technology Magazine: Mobile Technology Boom by Anthony Garritano

DocuSign has taken it a step further by allowing users to e-sign on their iPhone. With the recent release of DocuSign Version 9 and the newly deployed ‘Designed for Mobile’ functionality, DocuSign users can now view and e-sign documents on Android-based handhelds, such as Google Nexus One, T-Mobile G1 and more than two dozen devices, and access a new status console optimized for mobile browsers. This expanded functionality ensures business transactions are completed faster and easier—from anywhere, anytime.

Today busy professionals are demanding services that offer the convenience to conduct business while on the move. These services must be cost effective and flexible, with the ability to adapt to any environment, including quickly-evolving mobile platforms. Analysts predict that Android will become the world’s most popular smartphone platform by 2012, with estimates of more than 31.8 million Android phones and 126 million Android-based portable products to ship in 2013. DocuSign’s interoperability with Android technology offers users the ultimate in global on-the-go signing flexibility.

DocuSign also enables loan lenders, such as credit unions, to close loans paperlessly and stay ahead of Regulation Z. eDOC Innovations chose DocuSign to add eSignature to its ProDOC solution.

Credit Union Times: eDoc Adds Online Signatures, Hosts User Meeting by Marc Rapport

eDOC Innovations said it has added online electronic signature capabilities to its lending documentation platform and that a group of customer credit unions have just held their first user meeting.

The Utah-based company said it partnered with DocuSign to add the signature capability to its ProDOC solution and that $838 million, 85,000-member Idaho Central Credit Union is a first user.

The digital signature capability allows for a paperless loan closing, the document management company said.
