As August ends and September begins, let’s take a look at which electronic signature topics were hot this summer!

Cool Gadgets: Apple iPad, iPhone 4, Droid 2

While Apple’s iPad came out in the spring, the iPad continued the buzz this summer! With Designed for Mobile, you can use electronic signature from DocuSign on Blackberry, iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Mobile phones.

However, the iPad’s size and utility means that you can create envelopes on the iPad with templates enabled, or send for electronic signature with Freeform signing. Take a look at this blog post if you want to use DocuSign on your iPad!

A Feature Friday blog post also highlighted another way you can use DocuSign if you get an email attachment that needs electronic signatures, with Email to Electronic Signature. Of course, you can also use this feature on your desktop or laptop as well as your iPad!

Ensuring Your Electronic Signature Stands Up in Court

Ken Moyle, DocuSign’s Vice President of Legal and Corporate Affairs and Chief Legal Officer, shared thoughts regarding issues your should consider so that your electronic signature will stand up in court.

When you do business electronically, you should anticipate the need to produce evidence that proves a given person signed a given electronic document on a given date. That means you should look at taking such steps as:

Including authentication procedures to verify the identity of the signatory

Maintaining evidence of the particular electronic document that was signed electronically

Maintaining evidence of the electronic process that was followed in obtaining the electronic signature on the electronic document

For the rest of Ken’s commentary, take a look at the blog post which also shares authentication and electronic signature process considerations to note when selecting a vendor.

Our real estate team is also excited to make a special offer to new subscribers – between now and Labor Day, get a $20 Visa® gift card when you sign up for a DocuSign prepaid annual plan! Members of NAR should sign up with their NRDS numbers to take advantage of their special pricing.

Enjoy the last days of summer!

Citadel, a leading personal insurance agency providing auto, home and business coverage, trusts the DocuSign electronic signature platform to quickly, securely and completely transact insurance documents online from anywhere, anytime.

Jennifer Shoaf, agent and project manager at Citadel Insurance, shares:

Citadel wanted to reduce paper and provide greater convenience to our clients so we tried a few electronic signature providers. We found DocuSign to be the most intuitive and the easiest to use. Plus, DocuSign’s templates are incredible. With DocuSign as the market leader, we get a flexible and simple solution to eliminate paper, streamline processes and reduce costs—all while providing our customers with the convenience of signing from any mobile device.

Citadel will eliminate the logistical nightmare of faxing, printing and mailing insurance forms to customers. By incorporating DocuSign into Citadel’s signing workflow, Citadel customers can complete insurance forms in minutes—not days. Plus, DocuSign offers the convenience of signing using any Apple® iPhone® (including the new iPhone 4), RIM® BlackBerry® or any other smartphone. You can even use DocuSign on the iPad for electronic signature! DocuSign provides Citadel customers with a fast and trusted method to complete insurance forms, thereby significantly reducing the time, environmental impact and cost of traditional paper-based processing.

Insurance companies across the country are adopting the DocuSign electronic signature management service. Leaders such as 1st Guard, BannerLife, iPipeline, QuickQuote, and more and more insurance carriers and agencies have migrated to DocuSign to ensure compliance and enhance client satisfaction. For more information on how the DocuSign eSignature management service can positively impact the insurance industry, click the links!

Steve King, president and CEO of DocuSign, leaves us with his thoughts:

We are pleased to be the trusted electronic signature provider for Citadel and look forward to working with them to continue to better serve their clients. We welcome Citadel and anticipate an accelerated on-boarding of other technology-enabled insurance companies wanting to close business faster, easier and more green using DocuSign.

This Friday, we have TWO great electronic signature features to discuss. Both of these features were made available with DocuSign’s Spring ‘10 release.

How many of us get email attachments asking us for signature? Why print, sign and fax if you can just forward the email with…

Email to Electronic Signature

Just by forwarding attachments that require a signature to drafts@docusign.net, you can turn those pesky email attachments into a DocuSign Envelope. This email address is protected from spambots and you need JavaScript enabled to view it. Presto! The attachment becomes a document, loaded an envelope in your drafts folder in DocuSign. You can e-sign anywhere in the world, now that your email can talk to DocuSign for you!

How To use Email to Electronic Signature

Forward an existing email or create a new email. Fill out the Subject with the subject you want to use for the DocuSign envelope, add a message, and attach the document(s) to be signed. Send the email to DocuSign at: drafts@docusign.net.

DocuSign takes your email and creates a draft envelope with all the attachments added as the documents for the envelope, the

email subject you sent becomes the envelope Subject, and message is added as the envelope message.

After creating the draft envelope, DocuSign sends an email to you with a link to the draft envelope.

Follow the link to your envelope – you’ll need to log into to your console to get to the draft envelope. Add the recipients and Stick-e-Tabs as you would normally. Review, send and done – you’ve sent an envelope with Email to Electronic Signature!

iPad & iPhone Support

You just bought an iPad! Of course we support it! While the DocuSign iPad app and iPhone app are currently in beta (which also works on the iPhone 4!), DocuSign does work on the iPad and iPhone with Designed for Mobile. We also offer best practices in a previous blog post on how to use DocuSign on your iPad! Designed for Mobile also works on your BlackBerry, Google Android (including Droid 2), and Windows Mobile devices as well.

Stay tuned for more information on DocuSign for iPad!

This double feature Feature Friday was inspired by you and our customers! Have other features or questions about how to use DocuSign? Register for our weekly Quick Start electronic signature webinar or leave me a comment about what you’d like to see!

We also celebrated the Congressional Resolutions designating June 30 as National ESIGN Day.

DocuSign CEO and president Steve King welcomed more than 300 attendees with the news that DocuSign led a coalition to make June 30 National ESIGN Day. Both houses of the U.S. Congress passed the resolutions to make this happen (see the blog post link for details). The ESIGN Summit began with a special message from Representative Jim McDermott (D-WA) who commented on the transformation the ESIGN Act has had on how we conduct transactions and commerce today, and applauded DocuSign’s leadership in driving e-signature adoption to increase productivity and efficiency for businesses and government. In the video below, these remarks take place from 1:57- 2:52.

In his address titled “Embracing Our Common Humanity,” President Bill Clinton greeted the attendees, citing a number of significant anniversaries his foundation observed.

Along with presenting a balanced budget to Congress and the Middle East peace process, he noted that the ESIGN Act will have one of the largest impacts on how people live and work. President Clinton spoke about the top challenges the world faces today, and the ways information technology can be used to better the lives of people around the world. He expressed his belief in the transformative power of the Internet and said he was concerned most about expanding its use worldwide to connect more people and remove additional barriers:

We’ve learned throughout all of human history that trust is the basis for all commerce…We have to work harder to get countries not to block it, rather than keeping bad apples out of it

As the largest trade organization in America, NAR made a strategic financial investment in DocuSign in November 2009 through its Second Century Ventures fund.

NAR’s 1.1 million REALTORS® are helping people realize the American Dream of home ownership. Our alliance with DocuSign enables REALTORS® and their clients to track business from any place any time. Now real estate closings are radically faster, contracts don’t have to be faxed back and forth, and home buyers and sellers don’t have to come into the office to sign papers—they can even be signed from an airplane 30,000 feet in the sky

Thomas said, referring to a recent San Francisco Chronicle story about a couple who e-signed their real estate documents midflight with DocuSign.

In speaking how electronic signatures are moving to Cloud 2, Collins said traditional wet signatures are slow, provide no tracking and are not environmentally friendly:

I am happy to say that the last mile of every transaction is now done in the cloud. We are delighted today to be talking about our relationship with DocuSign, a leader in electronic signatures.

DocuSign founder and chief strategy officer, Tom Gonser, joined salesforce.com on stage to demonstrate how integrating DocuSign’s electronic signature platform with Salesforce Chatter can foster collaboration within an entire organization, sending alerts when a contract is opened, signed and when a deal is won in real-time.

Aaron Levie, co-founder and chief executive officer of Box.net, described the new workplace that takes place outside the walls of a single organization between networks of vendors and partners and business, where content is centralized in the cloud to integrate, manage and access online. Levie announced:

We are excited about the ability to now easily transact business in the cloud through our partnership with DocuSign. The millions of documents on Box.net can now be signed and transacted with DocuSign.

In conclusion, DocuSign’s Tom Gonser spoke about the evolution of how business transactions have been signed through the ages and showcased DocuSign’s latest innovations that are adding new levels of flexibility, collaboration and mobility to core business processes of completing business transactions. Gonser related that electronic signature technology has moved beyond just signing documents and that DocuSign has created a platform that manages the entire document electronic signature process—with powerful collaboration and negotiation tools to accelerate business from anywhere, anytime.

He demonstrated the first Apple® iPad electronic signature application, illustrating how easy it is to access documents for signature via handheld devices and the rich real-time reporting DocuSign offers.

Attendees praised DocuSign for driving the National ESIGN Day resolution and taking the industry lead on raising awareness of the key role of electronic signatures in the growth of commerce trend toward more environmentally friendly and efficient business practices.

DocuSign chairman Keith Krach commended the event for bringing together industry luminaries and leaders in markets such as finance, e-commerce and real estate:

DocuSign is not only leading the industry with the most advanced product, the most strategic partnerships and the greatest number of customers, by creating the industry discussion about the future of business transactions, DocuSign is validating its position as the market leader and global standard in electronic signature.

Sailing, sun, and eSignatures – summer’s heating up and so are the wires! What are people talking about when they’re talking about electronic signatures? I did a brief search, and here’s what I discovered…
<img src="http://www.docusign.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Screen-shot-2010-07-15-at-7.56.21-PM-300x200.png" alt="eSignature Makes Summer Sizzle!
Electronic Signatures in Real Estate: Doing Real Estate Deals Anywhere, With Mobile
Inman News: DocuSign beefs up mobile capabilities: Users can digitize documents with iPhone camera

…The latest version of DocuSign’s electronic signature management platform offers the ability to markup documents during negotiations, and also includes “designed for mobile” functionality for Apple’s iPhone and iPad and Android mobile devices, the company said today.

DocuSign for iPhone and iPad allows users to access documents from Google Docs, Box.net, and other cloud-based services. Apple iPhone users can digitize paper documents by snapping pictures of them with their phone, allowing them to add “sign here” tabs and collect electronic signatures from their clients.

“E-mail to signature” capabilities allow users to forward documents they receive as e-mail attachments to an e-mail address for conversion into DocuSign “electronic envelopes” that can be signed from anywhere in the world….

Florida Realtor: How To Go Paperless

…”With the introduction of digital signatures, you can now sit at your desk and send out contracts for signature anywhere in the world,” [Kevin] Gallagher notes that with digital signatures – he uses DocuSign – you don’t have to “print documents, make arrangements to meet clients, obtain signatures and forward the documents to the buyer or seller. …

Close it in the Cloud: Electronic Signatures Enables You To Close Deals Entirely in the Cloud
Cloud Computing Journal: DocuSign and Salesforce.com Create Cloud Transactions for Customers

…“Our work with DocuSign is moving the last mile of business transactions, contract signatures, to Cloud 2,” said Kendall Collins, chief marketing officer, salesforce.com. “Bringing together Salesforce CRM and Salesforce Chatter with DocuSign’s e-signature technology will deliver real-time collaboration around contract workflow processes, helping customers close deals entirely in the cloud.”

As demonstrated last week at Cloudforce 2010 in San Jose by salesforce.com’s Marc Benioff and DocuSign’s Tom Gonser, the DocuSign eSignature service offers users the ability to leverage data within Salesforce CRM and is enabled with Salesforce Chatter for real-time visibility and updates. Users can follow others and follow deals as the information is pushed in real-time. Whether it is a contract, acknowledgement or approval requiring one or more signatures, virtually everyone within an organization needs to get a document signed. With DocuSign being Salesforce Chatter-enabled, employees across the entire organization can collaborate during the e-signing process, delivering cost and workflow efficiencies. …

Cloud Computing.Info: DocuSign partners with Salesforce and Box.net

…The whole process is completely web-based, and customers can access the DocuSign platform for document and signatures management through a PC, a tablet or a smartphone.

Last week the company announced an OEM partnership with Salesforce, to integrate the eSignature technology in CRM and the new Chatter service.
The integration with DocuSign will be also available for those customers that will create custom applications on the Salesforce Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) cloud: Force.com

Also last week DocuSign secured a similar partnership with Box.net, a popular storage-as-a-service cloud computing provider in the consumer market.
Box.net goes beyond file sharing and synchronization, offering project collaboration and workflow management for business customers. Box.net customers can now sign all their documents through the eSignature process. …

Electronic Signature: A Technology Trend
VentureBeat: DocuSign adds more tools to make printed contracts obsolete

…Seattle-based DocuSign today announced of the latest update to its electronic signature tools. The big vision, according to founder and chief strategy officer Tom Gonser, is to treat electronic signatures as a platform (yes, tech companies love that word) rather than “just a single e-sign product.”

In other words, DocuSign wants to do more than provide the technology to replace handwritten signatures with electronic ones. Today, for example, it’s revealing new collaborative features. Previously, DocuSign users would send out a document for signature, and the recipient could either sign it or refuse. That doesn’t reflect what is often a more complicated process filled with last-minute changes, and it creates a risk where, in Gonser’s words, customers will say, “Let’s put on the brakes, let’s print it out,” and therefore “fall out of the electronic process.” …

ZDNet: DocuSign launches new tools to entice greater e-signature adoption

…If you’ve ever had to sign your life away to buy or sell a house, take out a loan or finalize a sales agreement, you know what a tedious process it can be to actually sit and sign your name over and over and over again.

What makes it really unfortunate is that there is a better way. And it’s been around for exactly 10 years. It was on June 30, 2000 that then-President Bill Clinton signed the Electronic Signatures in Global National Commerce (ESIGN) Act.

To commemorate the occasion, Docusign, a provider of an e-signature platform, is releasing of Docusign Spring 10, a major upgrade to its service. It’s adding things like voice biometrics as another method of identity confirmation and Agent role, a tool that allows a real estate agent, for example, to manage and review documents for a client and then submit them. …

PC Magazine: DocuSign Releases Updated Version of E-Signature Software

…DocuSign announced the new software as part of its ESIGN customer summit here. The company asked President Bill Clinton to speak about his work with electronic signatures in conjunction with his foundation’s charity work, while Salesforce.com also announced that it had made a strategic investment into DocuSign alongside an existing investment by the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

We’ve come a long way from my parents’ generation, where a fax would have been welcome technology for them, said Gary Thomas, the 2011 vice-president elect of the NAR. …

While sun and sailing are hot this summer, so are eSignatures – you can sign with the fast, complete and trusted electronic signature platform provider.

As the provider of the most trusted SaaS-based electronic signature management platform, we’re excited to announce our partnership with Box.net, the leading provider of cloud content management. As a featured service on the Box.net platform, the DocuSign eSignature solution will be available to Box.net’s four million users, empowering them to collaborate on content and then close transactions in the cloud. Karen Appleton, vice president of business development at Box.net, provides thoughts on adding DocuSign to the Box.net platform:

Box.net makes it easy for businesses to share, manage and collaborate around content online, boosting workplace productivity and efficiency. By adding DocuSign to the Box.net platform, we’re providing a comprehensive cloud-based solution that extends users’ workflow from file creation and collaboration on Box.net, to deal closure with the DocuSign eSignature service.

The DocuSign eSignature management platform provides a simple, secure approach to closing transactions online, and is now available as an OpenBox action. The integration with Box.net’s cloud content management solution empowers users to close deals on the same platform on which they manage and collaborate around associated content. All parties participating in a transaction can revise, comment and assign tasks on relevant files using Box.net’s sophisticated workflow and collaboration tools, and then complete the digital transaction using the DocuSign eSignature service. Whether it’s a proposal, contract, sales order or approval, Box.net users can leverage DocuSign to conduct business from concept to close anywhere, anytime and across devices of all types; DocuSign also brings electronic signature to the Apple® iPhone® and iPad®.

Matthew J. Schiltz, vice president of strategic business development and alliances at DocuSign, shares his perspective on collaboration with Box.net and DocuSign:

Millions of users are collaborating in the cloud today with Box.net, and for many, the natural conclusion of their collaboration is getting the deal closed. Now Box.net users can collaborate to close with DocuSign electronic signatures. This breakthrough is truly revolutionary.

We’re excited to share that Thoughts to Paper, an online provider of patent and trademark consulting services, uses the DocuSign electronic signature service to execute a variety of legal documents. Thoughts to Paper deploys DocuSign to obtain client signatures on contracts, credit card forms, and a variety of patent and trademark documents, and to promote the easy exchange of client supporting documents required for submissions to the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Tony Chow, president and CEO of Thoughts to Paper, shares his thoughts on selecting DocuSign’s eSignature service.

We were using another eSignature provider, but found its unlimited plan really wasn’t unlimited and the feature set was lacking. It started tacking on fees until we were paying more than 200 percent of our original subscription price. We did some additional research and were immediately impressed with DocuSign—reputation, value, experience, clientele—everything. We love it. Adding DocuSign to our workflow significantly streamlines our processes, while making it faster and easier for our clients to sign and complete documents in minutes online.

Thoughts to Paper quickly and easily finalizes a broad range of patent and trademark documents online using DocuSign. Instead of emailing, scanning, faxing or mailing bulky and time-consuming paper legal forms to clients to print, sign and fax or mail back, Thoughts to Paper quickly tags documents with DocuSign’s familiar yellow Stick-eTabs® and data fields through the DocuSign Console. The client receives an email notification, adopts an e-signature and is guided through the e-signing process in minutes. Clients can also easily attach supporting documents for patent or trademark submission. The DocuSign eSignature solution ensures safety and security through encrypted PDFs and enhances client satisfaction using a fast, simple-to-use anywhere, anytime online signing platform. The e-signing convenience and accuracy of information received through the use of the DocuSign eSignature platform is immeasurable.

It is vital for Thoughts to Paper to quickly receive signed documents as inventors want to be the first to file a patent application—a step critical to obtaining patent rights. By using DocuSign’s eSignature platform, Thoughts to Paper can receive signed legal paperwork from its clients in a matter of seconds. As a result, Thoughts to Paper is able to file a provisional patent and obtain patent pending status for clients within a few hours’ time. Steve King, president and CEO of DocuSign, provides insight to the adoption of DocuSign’s electronic signature platform:

Thoughts to Paper trusts DocuSign to provide secure, easy-to-use end-to-end eSignature platform to streamline business processes while providing a quality, client-focused experience. We anticipate significant growth in 2010 in this market segment as the adoption of our eSignature platform in legal services continues to accelerate.

Did you know that this month has been a busy one for electronic signature in the news? Going paperless and using DocuSign was named the number one way to use technology to save time and money in Inman News.

Inman News: 5 Ways to Use Tech To Save Time and Money by Katie Lance

1. Go paperless. One of the biggest trends I am seeing are agents using DocuSign. DocuSign is an amazing product that really helps agents be more efficient and save more time and money. Clients love it, and as a bonus, it helps you to go “green.”

My biggest piece of advice for agents is to embrace technology. It’s not always easy, but we are living in an amazing age. Think of the world before we had the Internet, compared to now — isn’t it amazing?! Don’t be afraid of technology; embrace it and it will save you more time and money in the long haul.

DocuSign has partnered with many other real estate technology providers to enable you to keep your processes paperless. Click to learn more about our real estate partners.

Recently, Adobe announced an e-Signature SaaS offering, which prompted commentary from our own Tom Gonser. TechFlash published Tom’s response, following their reporting on Adobe’s new electronic signature service.

TechFlash: DocuSign to Adobe: Thanks for validating the e-signature market by John Cook

Last Friday, we reported on Adobe’s new offering in the electronic signatures arena, a move that we suggested could strike some fear into the hearts of the folks behind DocuSign. But the Seattle electronic signature startup is hardly running scared. In fact, founder and vice president of product strategy Tom Gonser said in a follow-up statement that his initial reaction to Adobe’s new offering was: “What took them so long?”

“Seeing Adobe enter the market validates what we’ve known for years—this is a huge market, and our SaaS-based product delivers tremendous value very quickly. Seeing Adobe abandon software-based electronic signature software in favor of this new service-based approach illustrates the rapid decline of software-based PKI digital signature solutions, which are too complex and costly to administer and manage. As the trusted leader in SaaS-based electronic signatures with over four million users, and the established standard in important markets like Financial Services and Real Estate (where the National Association for Realtors (NAR) has named DocuSign as the exclusive provider to the entire REALTOR market), we have a sizeable market lead over Adobe.

If you compare our service to the new Adobe service, it is immediately obvious that we have a sizable product lead also. DocuSign provides much more than just a signature. We also provide authentication, workflow, data collection and collaboration—all critical components of a business-class e-signature platform. The Adobe service has none of this. So we see this announcement as the best of both worlds. A large company just validated the market we created more than six years ago is huge, and it offers a solution that is not competitive. The awareness created by Adobe will accelerate DocuSign’s business even more.”

If you want to try DocuSign’s free electronic signature service, DocuSign Lite, go to DocuSign.com and use the widget on the right hand side of your screen. You can also use DocuSign Lite as a Firefox plug in or as an iGoogle gadget.

Mortgage Technology Magazine mentioned DocuSign’s “Designed for Mobile” functionality, as it enables users to eSign from their mobile devices, including iPhone, Blackberry, Android, and Windows Mobile phones.

Mortgage Technology Magazine: Mobile Technology Boom by Anthony Garritano

DocuSign has taken it a step further by allowing users to e-sign on their iPhone. With the recent release of DocuSign Version 9 and the newly deployed ‘Designed for Mobile’ functionality, DocuSign users can now view and e-sign documents on Android-based handhelds, such as Google Nexus One, T-Mobile G1 and more than two dozen devices, and access a new status console optimized for mobile browsers. This expanded functionality ensures business transactions are completed faster and easier—from anywhere, anytime.

Today busy professionals are demanding services that offer the convenience to conduct business while on the move. These services must be cost effective and flexible, with the ability to adapt to any environment, including quickly-evolving mobile platforms. Analysts predict that Android will become the world’s most popular smartphone platform by 2012, with estimates of more than 31.8 million Android phones and 126 million Android-based portable products to ship in 2013. DocuSign’s interoperability with Android technology offers users the ultimate in global on-the-go signing flexibility.
